Our new menu for Spring 2018 has gone live today (1 March) with some spectacular new dishes and our chef’s take on a guaranteed lunchtime favourite: the sandwich.

Having been awarded the title of Manchester’s Best Food Pub for the 2nd time in October, we wanted our new menu to showcase the talents of chef Liam Rutherford and his team in a way that would be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

So now you can call in and enjoy the award-winning service and atmosphere of The Clarence, and get a taste of the quality of ingredients and innovation of the kitchen team, while enjoying a quick lunchtime sandwich.

Head Chef Liam Rutherford said “I’m really excited about the quality of ingredients and the flavour combinations we’ve put together for this new menu.

“A sandwich is probably the first thing anyone learns to make as a kid, but we’re showing the same attention to detail and consideration to these sandwiches as we do with our main menu.”

“We think these could be the best sandwiches in Greater Manchester.”

The sandwich menu is available at lunchtime, Monday – Saturday, 12 – 5pm. For a seriously filling lunch you can add a side of spiced fries AND a mug of the soup of the day for just £3. Have a look at the lunch menu here; we’d love to hear which your favourite is once you’ve tried them.

In addition to the sandwiches, we’ve also bolstered our menu of Clarence Comforts, with Fish & Chips, The Clarence Burger, Clarence Hot Dog and the very popular Macaroni Cheese now available on the main menu throughout the week.

The new main course dishes bring a real variety to the menu and showcase our ongoing commitment to doing classic British food with contemporary twists and a flair for innovation and quality. The Beef & Oxtail Suet Pudding with hispi cabbage and creamed mash will be a popular choice, and the Duck Breast with Boulangère potatoes, duck leg spring roll and carrot & anise purée will (we think) be something that customers will really enthuse about once they try it. Fantastic feedback to the Curried Cauliflower Risotto (particularly from our vegetarian diners) means that it too has joined the main menu this time.

Bookings are being taken for the best New Year’s Eve party in Bury, complete with a decadent dining experience in Manchester’s food pub of the year.

You can now take a look at the special NYE Menu, served from 6.30pm on the evening, and help us plan an evening that will keep you dancing through the first few hours of 2018.

Our DJ Eve will be filling the dancefloor after dinner, both in the bar and upstairs in the Fallen Angel where the cocktails will be flowing. Our Disco theme will take in everything from the funk and soul records that inspired the disco boom of the 1970s to floor-fillers of the disco era and the best tracks inspired by the genre.

Just like our food, the music will be the best, not just the best-known. We’re thinking more Sly & The Family Stone and Chic than Abba and The Bee Gees, but we’d like to know what you want to hear on New Year’s Eve. Booking and pre-ordering is required for a very special Clarence take on the classic Christmas lunch, with 3 courses and a welcome glass of Prosecco for £30.

Simple Sundays with Bury’s Best Roast.

There are enough tough choices to make during your week, so we’re simplifying things for Sundays at The Clarence.

You won’t find our usual newspaper-sized menus on Sundays anymore, so you can focus on the really important decision with your roast: Beef, Lamb, or both.

Of course there’s a tasty veggie roast with cauliflower cheese and all the trimmings.

And you’ll still have to choose between the standard roast and The Clarence roast, with a treat board including Oxtail Toad in the Hole, cauliflower gratin & creamed potatoes.

We still offer a range of starters, plus the ever-popular Clarence Burger, Clarence Hot Dog and staples like the 8oz rump steak, Fish & Chips, Cumberland sausage & mash and veggie options including Macaroni Cheese and Cauliflower Risotto with Cauliflower Cheese Croquettes, Samphire & Toasted Cashews.

Service starts at midday every Sunday until we run out of roasts, so book a table early to avoid disappointment.

We’ve not been sitting back and taking it easy since we were voted Greater Manchester’s Best Food Pub last month. Chef Liam Rutherford and team have been working away on the menu to get ready for winter.

To go with the cosy chairs by the fire, we’ve added some Clarence interpretations of some comforting classics to our popular £12.75 2 course menu. We think the Cannelini beans on sourdough, with a tomato sauce, fennel and feta will be a winning starter. The pork, pistachio and apricot terrine is a great way to get a taste of our Christmas menu in advance if you can’t wait for the festivities to begin.

We’ve had a great response to the macaroni cheese pasta since it joined the vegetarian options on the menu, and it’ll go down well as an addition to the 2 course main options. The braised pork shoulder steak served with a tomato stew is another wholesome option as the nights draw in.

Food Pub Of The Year!

We are delighted to say that The Clarence has been named Food Pub Of The Year 2017 at the Manchester Food And Drink Festival Awards.

Our Head Chef Liam Rutherford picked up the prize at the awards ceremony alongside chef Luke and AGMs Bec and Greg.

The shortlist of 6 fantastic food pubs from across Greater Manchester shows how much great cooking is happening across the city, and particularly here in North Manchester.

Since the shortlist was announced we have been ‘mystery visited’ by the MFDF judges and, of course, voted for by the public.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted for us. We’ve had a lovely response from pub regulars and occasional visitors who truly appreciate what we’ve been trying to do, and will continue to do, with this fantastic old town centre pub. It’s an honour to bring this award back to Bury for the second time since we opened in 2014.

We look forward to welcoming visitors new and old for some award-winning food soon!

Christmas at The Clarence

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…to be at The Clarence.

We might not *quite* be roasting chestnuts on an open fire (we like to keep the door of the wood burner closed for a nice constant heat in winter), but we still think The Clarence is the most festive pub in town.

Our 3 course Christmas menu is ready to view now and to enjoy in the pub or restaurant from 27 November. There are plenty of rich, festive flavours and of course a show-stopping take on the traditional turkey dinner.
